The Best Time to Call Us Is Before You Think You Need To

Most families find us in the spring of junior year, a little breathless. The deadlines feel suddenly real, the Common App is a mystery, and their student hasn’t given the essay a moment’s thought. We can absolutely help at that stage, and we do. But if we’re being honest, junior year is not our favorite time to meet you.
Here’s what we’d rather do.
If your student is a freshman or sophomore, we’re not thinking about applications yet. We’re thinking about the four years ahead and how to use them well. What courses will keep doors open? What activities are worth committing to—not for a résumé, but because they build something real? What summer opportunities might lead them in unexpected directions?
These are low-pressure conversations with high-yield returns. We’re really asking, “Who is this person, and what kind of environments will help them become more fully themselves?
By junior year, the identity work we’ve been doing quietly shows up in a very practical way. The college list takes shape, not from rankings but from self-knowledge. We know what kind of campus culture fits. We know what your student needs to thrive. We know the financial landscape and how to navigate it. And we know how to find the schools that will not just accept your student but will want them.
Everything converges in their senior year. The essay, the applications, the submissions, the waiting, the decisions. This is the stretch that feels most urgent, and we are very good at managing it. But the students who have done the earlier work arrive here calmer, more confident, and—not coincidentally—more compelling on paper.
The college process has a reputation for being stressful. We think that reputation is partly a function of when most people start. The earlier you begin thinking about who you are and what you want, the less the application feels like a scramble and the more it feels like a natural conclusion to a conversation you’ve already been having.
We’re happy to start that conversation whenever you are. Freshman year, sophomore year, junior year, senior year. We’re ready for you. There’s always something useful we can do together.
